About
Christine van der Meer is an art educator, illustrator, painter, 3D/sculpture and pottery artist based in Chattanooga, TN.
As an artist, Christine is inspired by people, travel, and the world around her. Her work is infused with bright colors and bold forms, as she seeks to portray mystery and beauty through her work .
She has explored and found joy in an array of different mediums as she’s evolved as a person and creator. From painting to printmaking, to illustrating, to sculpture and ceramics, her artistic practice is broad and diverse.
Most recently, her work has centered on fusing the concept of fiber textures into the more traditional mediums of painting and pottery. The idea that each work of art is being knitted together - with each stitch visible upon closer inspection - is the inspiration behind this phase in her artistic journey.
While producing her own artwork brings her much joy, it is as an art educator where Christine invests the bulk of her professional time and energy. She is deeply committed to the success of her students and finds much fulfillment in helping aspiring artists to find their creative voice.
In her 10+ years teaching art at local independent schools, studios, and camps, she has helped thousands of students produce a combined 15,000+ pieces of artwork. Behind the numbers, though, are the stories behind each piece, and the personal relationships with each child and artist, that have brought her the greatest satisfaction.
She lives in North Chattanooga with her South African husband and two children, plus one very intelligent Cavapoo, Remi. Besides her work as a mother, wife, artist and educator, she loves to travel internationally, spend time at the ocean, and has recently developed a small obsession with Mahjong.
